This is a terrific release from Brooklyn native and veteran MC Mos Def. The Ecstatic features Flacco with a harder, more grimy tone, and with the outcome is raw fire. Not only is Def’s flow exceptional, but the production is fantastic throughout the entire tape. Quite possibly his hottest album to date, The Ecstatic places Mos Def on top of the game and lands him the number one spot on our list of 10 best rap albums of 2009.

This is a true Wu-Tang album, with lots of kung fu samples and twangy loops. Like in Pt. I, Ghostface is all over the album, and he holds it down just as much as Chef. This isn’t some 12 track drop either, there are a lot of songs, and since Raekwon held down each one in classic style, he gets the #2 spot on our top ten list of ’09.

Another mega-hit for Hova, BP3 did not disappoint, featuring some of the biggest songs of the year, and accompanied by a incredible tour. Like all of the top three albums, this drop by Jay is an instant classic that will be cherished for generations. It fits into our top ten at number 3 best rap album of 2009.

This was a fantastic debut album from D.C.’s Wale. The tape is very well rounded and features percussion heavy beats in the “go-go” style of music. This is was the debut album of the year and came in our top ten at number 4.

Til the Casket Drops was the long awaited third album from Clipse, and when it finally dropped on December 8th, it was undoubtedly one of the hottest albums of the year. Though the duo is known to be heavily produced by The Neptunes, there is more of a mix of producers compared to their last two albums, and brothers Malice and “Pusha T” effortlessly kill each impeccably produced track.

Once at the very tip top of the rap game, Em’s recent albums have been too psycho and uncomfortable to even listen to. Though Em still leads us to believe he is insane throughout the entire album, the difference maker in this album is that Shady’s chorus’ are much easier on the ears. More raw rap, and less of the mutilated death that listeners have become accustomed to. His double disc release of Relapse:Refill is loaded with Dre beats and is a reminder that the white rapper is still one of the best lyrical talents ever to pick up a mic.

This is the sophmore album for K’naan and he came hard with a lot of lively joints and Somalian flavor. There are lots of African style drum lines and party beats that K’naan kills with his accentual flow, and by doing so has established himself as one of the premier MC’s of 2009.

50′s album had high expectations, and while some say he did not fully live up to the hype, he still had one of the best drops of 2009. Before I Self Destruct was markedly more gangster and mean, almost reminiscent of his “Get Rich or Die Tryin” days. Fifty isn’t falling off at all, this album was just another reminder that he’s one of the best in the game.

DOOM (used to be MF Doom) dropped this album in March and it still features the same quirky uniqueness that DOOM is known for. Though DOOM’s off-beat style may seem out of sync at times, his abrasive flow matched with funky production makes for an entertaining and solid release from the English rapper, and hits our list at number 9.

Brother Ali is a white rapper originally born in Wisconsin, and is a devout Muslim with a smooth and laid back flow. His fourth album “Us” was produced solely by Ant of Atmosphere and features some chill beats laced with Brother Ali’s consistently solemn, yet excellent rhymes, and makes our list of best in ’09 at number 10.
